Tragic Monaghan schoolgirl Aoibhe Byrne was remembered as a “a light that shone so brightly” at her funeral mass this morning.

The 14-year-old died following an accident at her Carrickmacross home on Wednesday evening.

A funeral service took place on Sunday morning at St Peter and St Paul's Church, lower Magheracloone at 11:30am, which was attended by Aoibhe’s friends, family, and teammates from the Magheracloone Mitchells GAA club, the Carrick Cruisers basketball club, and the Carrick Rovers AFC.

A packet of brownie mix, a Magheracloone Mitchells GAA jersey symbolising “Aoibhe’s love of the game, a microphone, and her mobile phone were brought up to the altar during the offertory procession.

An account of Aoibhe’s life, written by her devastated parents Olivia and Gary, was read out during the mass.

“At this time, words are absent to describe the feeling of heartbreak from what has happened to Aoibhe.

“Aoibhe was a light that shone so brightly throughout her short life. We were blessed to have her in our lives.”

The congregation heard that Aoibhe gave “everyone long-lasting memories of fun, devilment, and genuine love. To Aoibhe, it didn’t matter if you were the most popular. She made time for everyone. No one was left out."

“It didn’t matter your age, your colour, your creed. She had time for everyone with that wonderful smile to greet you whenever she met you.

“Aoibhe enjoyed being a part of all social groups. She had a love for sports and over the years tried her hand at most things. But in recent years, her true love was for the GAA, basketball, soccer, and handball. All of these activities gave her great joy.

“Family meant everything to her; from the special bond she had with her dad to the closeness with her mum. Aoibhe was the life and soul of the house.

“Rest in peace now, our little girl. We love you so much.”

Tributes have been paid on social media to the 14-year-old following her death.

In a post on Facebook, Carrick Rovers AFC said: “Carrick Rovers AFC would like to extend its deepest condolences to the family on sudden and tragic loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this sad time. May she Rest In Peace.”

Magheracloone Mitchells GAA club said: “In light of the tragic news we received yesterday evening, all club activities are suspended until further notice as a mark of respect.”
