A young lifeguard who died after falling from a 15ft cliff will be laid to rest on Wednesday.

Conor King (22) from Broadale in Cork, lost his life in a tragic accident near Garretstown beach in West Cork on Saturday.

He was killed after falling through a 20m blowhole while camping with friends over the sunny weekend.

It is believed he did not see that the entrance to the blowhole was leading into a deep sea cave below.

His body was recovered shortly before midnight on Saturday following a major rescue operation by emergency services.

The rescue operation was coordinated by the Valentia Coast Guard and supported by the Shannon-based Sikorsky helicopter Rescue 115.

Local RNLI units, the Old Head of Kinsale Coast Guard unit, local Gardai, paramedics and a specialist cave rescue team were also involved.

Conor is reported to have died instantly and was pronounced dead at the scene despite paramedics' attempt to resuscitate him.

His funeral will be private in accordance with Covid-19 guidelines but the service will be live streamed at 11am from Rochestown church.

A cremation service will follow at 1pm which will also be live streamed by Island Crematorium.

Instead of giving flowers, Conor's family have requested people to donate to West Cork Rapid Response, and West Cork Underwater Search and Rescue.

Conor was a engineering and biomedical science student in Munster Technology University and worked part time as a lifeguard in Rochestown Park hotel.
