The funeral of a tragic man who was killed in a car crash just hours before his wedding will take place on Tuesday.

Myles “Miley” Harty (20), from Askeaton, Co Limerick, died instantly when the car he was a front seat passenger in left the road and hit a pole after midnight on Friday.

Mr Harty was due to get married to his sweetheart Kate Qulligan at St Munchin’s Church in Limerick City on Saturday afternoon.

His funeral mass will take place in St. Mary's Church, Askeaton at 12pm this Tuesday, followed by burial at Reilig Mhuire Cemetery.

A notice on RIP.ie reads: “Very deeply regretted by his loving parents Miley and Margaret, sisters Noreen, Margaret and Nicole, brother Jimmy, fiancée Kate Quilligan, niece Amelia, brothers-in-law Connie and Eddie, other relatives and friends.

“Requiem Mass, for family and close friends, will take place at 12.00pm on Tuesday (August 24th) in St. Mary's Church, Askeaton. Funeral afterwards to Reilig Mhuire, Askeaton.

“In compliance with the current HSE guidelines, the funeral will be limited to fifty people. Please ensure social distancing and public health advice is adhered to.”

The wider Traveller community, of which Mr Harty was a member of, has been plunged into deep sadness, since his tragic death.

Fr Seán Ó’Longaigh, Askeaton Parish Priest, said Mr Harty was well-known in his rural west Limerick community and added that the entire town was “in shock.”

“It’s very sad for the families, they are now switching from a wedding to a funeral. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, naturally.”

“Myles was a young person who grew up locally, he went to the local school, he’d have an awful lot of relations around Askeaton. He was due to get married in Limerick today, yes, the family must be in bits.”
