RIP Funeral details announced for 'beautiful' Roscommon crash victim Liga Smolaka

A tragic mum who died in a single-vehicle crash in Roscommon on Friday will be laid to rest this week.

Liga Smolaka (35), from Latvia and living in Sligo, was one of three people who were treated at the scene on the R293 between Ballaghadereen and Gorteen, at Edmonstown Road in the early hours of Friday morning.

She was rushed to Mayo University Hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

Ms Smolaka is survived by her daughter Viktorja, partner Andrejs, and brothers Santis, Aris, and Sandris.

She will repose at The Church View Funeral Home, Collooney on Wednesday from 6.30pm to 8pm.

A committal service will take place at Lakelands Crematorium, Cavan on Thursday at 1pm.

A notice on RIP.ie reads: “The death has occurred of Liga Smolaka, No. 70 Corn Mill, Ballymote, Co. Sligo, 11th of March 2022, following a road traffic accident.

“Deeply regretted and loved by her daughter Viktorja, partner Andrejs, brothers Santis (Ballymote), Aris (Latvia) and Sandris (U.K.), many relatives, friends and her work colleagues at Kearns' Centra, Caltragh, Sligo.

“Liga will repose at The Church View Funeral Home, Collooney (F91 AH21) on Wednesday, 16th March, from 6.30pm to 8pm. Removal on Thursday to Lakelands Crematorium, Cavan, for a Committal Service at 1pm.”

Tributes have been flowing in for the “welcoming and friendly” woman since news of her death broke.

One person said: “Deepest sympathy to Liga's partner and daughter also her family in Latvia. Such a tragic loss of a lovely young woman. Thinking of you all at this sad and difficult time.”

Another wrote: “Deeply saddened by your loss Liga. What a beautiful soul you were to know.”

A third added: “Deepest sympathy to Vitkorja and all of Ligas family on her heartbreaking sudden passing. A beautiful girl who was a pleasure to know and a joy to work with. Heaven has gained an angel.”

Daniel Dolphin (27) from Derroon, Ballymote, who had been travelling with Ms Smolaka at the time of the crash, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A third person, a man in his 20s, was also taken to the hospital but his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

Mr Dolphin will repose at his sister Jackie’s home in Ballymote on Monday March 14th from 4pm to 7pm.

His removal will take place on Tuesday morning before the 12pm funeral mass at Church of the Immaculate Conception, Ballymote.

Burial will take place afterwards at St. Columba’s cemetery.
