A little boy who died following a fatal road traffic collision in a housing estate in Longford town this afternoon was just four years old.

Gardaí said that the collision, which involved a single vehicle, occurred n the Ardnacassa housing estate in the town at around 2pm. They attended the scene along with members of the emergency services.

However, the child was pronounced dead at the scene.

There has been a great sense of sadness in the local community this evening.

Uruemu Adejinmi, vice chair of Longford Municipal District, told Independent.ie she was shocked to hear the tragic news.

Ms Adejinmi said she was in the Ardnacassa housing estate just before the tragedy struck.

"It’s just so shocking to know something so tragic happened just after I was there,” she told Independent.ie.

"My heart goes out to everyone affected.

“Everyone will be hugging their children a little tighter tonight,” she added.

Meanwhile, gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this incident to come forward.

Any road users who were travelling in the Palace Crescent area of Ardnacassa between 1:30pm – 2:30pm this afternoon, and who may have camera footage (including dash cam) is asked to make it available to gardaí.

The coroner has been notified and a post-mortem is to take place at a later date.
