Five inmates, including four back from temporary release to celebrate Christmas, have tested positive for Covid-19 at Loughan House open prison.

The IPS confirmed the development a day after mass testing at Wheatfield Prison confirmed five inmates and 10 staff at that facility have contracted the virus.

In a statement the IPS said: “Five prisoners have tested positive for Covid 19 in Loughan House Open Centre.

“Four of the five prisoners who tested positive were on temporary release and had been placed in quarantine on their return to Loughan House.

“This news may be a cause for concern especially if you have a family member or friend currently imprisoned in Loughan House.

“The Irish Prison Service would like to reassure you that we are doing everything we can to stop the spread of the virus within the prison.

“There is no reported positive cases among staff to date.”
