The family of a young Irishman seriously injured in Australia have set up a fundraiser to support his long-term care.

Stefan Carroll from Co Carlow was left paralysed from the chest down following a freak accident in a swimming pool which caused a severe spinal injury.

Stefan (28) emigrated to Brisbane seven years ago with mother Clodagh, her husband Tom and his younger sister Halle.

He sustained the life-changing injury when he hit his head at the bottom of the pool after diving in, shattering three vertebrae.

He has already had two surgeries to stabilise his neck and is now off a ventilator.

While Clodagh and Tom have permanent residency in Australia, Stefan is on a work permit, meaning he will have to pay for long-term care and rehabilitation once he is discharged from hospital.

“It’s amazing to still have him, we’re trying to stay positive and to get Stefan through, but he’s the one getting us through. He’s been so brave - but we’ve had some very tough days and he has a long road ahead of him,” his mother Clodagh Carroll Sibbald told The Carlow Nationalist.

“Stefan has shown me courage I have never seen before.”

Praising the excellent care he has received in hospital, she added that Stefan will need considerable rehabilitation, treatment and medical equipment.
