Local councillors have told how the community of Park Avenue in Dungannon, Co Tyrone has been left "stunned" following the death of a two-year-old girl yesterday afternoon.

The child died later in hospital after emergency services were called to an address in the Park Avenue area.

A post-mortem will now take place to establish the child's cause of death.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of the toddler.

DUP Councillor Clement Cuthbertson, who knows the Park Avenue area well spoke of his shock last night.

“This is just heart-breaking, absolutely heart-breaking,” Cllr Cuthbertson. “The exact circumstances I do not know, just what the police have put out.

“A post mortem will hopefully provide the answers but whatever the circumstances it is tragic. This is just so sad, my thought and prayers are with the child's family.”

Sinn Fein’s Michelle Gildernew said the community had been stunned by the news.

"The local community is in shock at the news that a two year-old child has died in an incident in the Park Avenue area of Dungannon,” she said.

"My thoughts are with all those affected by this tragedy.

"A police murder investigation is underway and that must be allowed to proceed and I would call on anyone with any information which may help those inquiries to contact the PSNI."
