Dublin Zoo and Fota Island Wildlife Park are to share a €1.1 million bump in funding after a campaign to save Dublin Zoo went viral during the week.

The money will be split among both facilities with another €500,000 being used to support 69 small and medium-sized zoos across the country.

It follows an appeal during the week to support Dublin Zoo after it emerged that it was in serous financial trouble.

A fundraising campaign raised more than €1 million in less than 12 hours which has now risen to €2 million.

“Thanks to your incredible support we have now hit an epic milestone of €2,000,000,” they said on Twitter.

“ In just two short days you have made our year – we will never be able to thank you enough.’

Ministers Darragh O’Brien and Malcolm Noonan said today that while the State does not usually provide funding to the zoo sector, he made clear that this was due to the challenging year zoos have faced due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The outpouring of public support sparked by the Dublin Zoo appeal is testament to the great love so many people have for our zoos. I am mindful too of the staff, whose primary concern has always been the animals in their care,” said Noonan.

"I do hope that Government can continue to support our zoos and aquariums until they can open their doors again and thrive."

Minister O’Brien added: “I joined the thousands of people all over Ireland in ‘adopting’ an animal from Dublin Zoo this week.

“I think the campaign, which had a global reach and was featured in the New York Times, shows just how loved our zoos are and how they are an important place for making memories. I am delighted that our Department was in a position to help.
