A 22-year-old man has died after being injured in car rally in Co Kerry.

The tragedy occurred during the Killarney Forestry Rally in Mount Eagle, Castleisland at approximately 2pm on Sunday afternoon.

The man, who was driving a car, was badly injured and airlifted to Cork University Hospital where he passed away.

His passenger, a man in his 30s, suffered non life-threatening injuries.

A garda spokesperson told sundayworld.com: "Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of a fatal single vehicle road traffic collision that occurred at approximately 2pm on Sunday, 20th February, 2022, at a rally event at Mount Eagle, Castleisland, County Kerry.

"Gardaí are engaging with the relevant agencies in relation to this matter."

The Killarney and District Motor Club released the following statement last night: "The Killarney and District Motor Club regret to inform you that following an accident on SS4 of the Killarney Forestry Rally, a competitor succumbed to his injuries and passed away in Cork University Hospital tonight (Sunday).

"May he rest in peace. We extend our sympathies to his family and friends."
