This is the moment a brazen bike thief was caught red-handed at Dublin’s Connolly Station trying to break the lock off a parked bike.

The man, who is dressed in green pants and grey jacket with a white cap, is seen trying to steal the bike by breaking the lock off with what appears to be a tree branch.

In the Tiktok video entitled, ‘It is I just lost the keys’ the cheeky thief is confronted by another man who says to him, “that’s not your bike. What’re doing?'

To a muffled reply from the would be bicycle-thief, the man adds, ‘That’s not your bike, you have a f**kin’ tree in there. You’re up to no good’.

The video cuts before we see the outcome of the encounter.

Bicycle thefts have become a growing problem since the boom in cycling at the start of the pandemic.

According to figures released by gardai earlier this year, almost 7,000 bicycles were stolen across the country from January 2020 to May this year.

Of these, over 70pc of all bikes stolen were in the capital. This meant Dublin had more than 13 times the number of bike thefts of any other county.

Gardai also warned owners to take note of their bike’s serial number, lock it securely to an immoveable object or in a well-lit area, and try and store it indoors when not in use.
