A Co Donegal garda has been hailed a hero after rescuing a woman from a river in Letterkenny.

Garda Peter McGee entered the River Swilly on Tuesday evening after the woman had slipped into the freezing water.

A passer-by called Letterkenny Garda station and Garda McGee and other officers rushed to the scene.

Garda McGee, who is originally from Gaoth Dobhair, wasted no time in wading into the water close to the Port Bridge.

He managed to reach the struggling woman while holding onto the walls of the bridge to keep himself safe.

Assistance then arrived and the pair were taken from the water.

The woman received medical attention for shock but is understood to be recovering well.

A spokesperson for Garda Síochána Donegal said: "This incident was likely to end in tragedy and we commend Garda McGee for his bravery and quick actions."
