A teenager who passed away following a tragic incident at a school in Cork has been named.

Craig Rodrigues (15), a third year student at Skibbereen Community School in Cork, was rushed to hospital after taking ill on Tuesday.

He was brought to Cork University Hospital (CUH) for treatment but sadly passed away yesterday evening.

Gardaí investigating the incident are treating it as a tragic accident.

School Principal Anton O’Mahony said they are deeply saddened by Craig Rodrigues’ sudden death and that their thoughts are with his family.

Trained psychologists and the school’s critical incident team are also helping students to come to terms with the tragedy.

“Craig became unwell in school and tragically passed away yesterday evening in the care of the hospital medical staff in CUH,” Mr O Mahony said in a statement.

“We are deeply saddened by his passing, and our thoughts are very much with the Rodrigues family at this time.

“We have been in contact with his parents who have requested that we all understand their need for privacy at this very difficult time.

“As a school we greatly appreciate the many offers of support that we have been receiving from the local and wider community,” he added.

The school’s Critical Incident Management Team, and wider school staff, are helping students to deal with the tragedy.

Psychologists from NEPS (National Educational Psychological Service) have also been at the school and are guiding the staff in their efforts to assist the students.
