word fail Bono's poem about Russia Ukraine conflict is torn apart on Twitter
'Is this literally the worst poem ever written?'
A poem written by Bono about the Russia Ukraine conflict that was read out by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi yesterday has caused a collective face-palm on Twitter.
The earnest U2 singer wrote the poem as it is a “tradition" for him to send one to the White House every St Patrick’s Day but this one was immediate torn apart on social media.
During a lunch with lawmakers Speaker Pelosi revealed that Bono had sent it to her earlier that morning.
The poem was read at the White House’s annual 'Friends of Ireland' luncheon, which takes place in celebration of St Patrick’s Day.
One Twitter user has now shared the full poem with the caption: “Is this literally the worst poem ever written?”

Is now the Ukraine
And Saint Patrick's name

Another commented: “Insane to look at the net worth of Bono and Pelosi and know that this is as much as they’re willing to do to help, AND they think it means anything?”
Some included parodies of their own: “I want to take shelter from the poison rain Where the streets are Ukraine Yeah yeah yeah” *Tears rolling down Vladimir Putin’s face as he presses the big ‘Ceasefire’ button*.”

“This reads like something that would be published in the letters section of the kind of local newspaper that only gets letters from five people and is forced to publish all of them every week to fill space,” one user added.
Another responded directly to the line “From the psycho in this human family,” writing: “Came here to say this line is absolutely the most unhinged. Is he saying we are all one big family and Putin is no longer invited to dinner?"
“Haven't the civilians suffered enough?," added another. "Did they also need a poem by Bono Hewson?
Other comments included:
“Might have to stay off Twitter till the danger of coming across the Bono poem has completely passed.”
“Woke up this morning and Nancy Pelosi reading Bono's atrocious St Patrick’s Day Ukraine poem had already downloaded into my iTunes library.
“Thankfully, unlike the rest of Twitter, haven't seen that Bono poem yet. So today thank god it's them instead of me."
In a tweet U2 quoted Bono: “I’ve a tradition of sending a limerick to @SpeakerPelosi’s St. Patrick’s Day lunch over the years. This year the limerick is irregular & not funny at all.
"We stand with the people of Ukraine & their leader. It wasn’t written to be published, but since it’s out, here it is - Bono
Oh, St Patrick he drove out the snakes
With his prayers but that’s not all it takes
For the snake symbolises
An evil that rises
And hides in your heart, as it breaks
And the evil has risen my friends
From the darkness that lives in some men
But in sorrow and fear
That’s when saints can appear
To drive out those old snakes once again
And they struggle for us to be free
From the psycho in this human family
Ireland’s sorrow and pain
Is now the Ukraine
And St Patrick’s name now Zelensky
