Anti-vaxxer who protested at Leo Varadkar's house snarls 'Get off my property'

Video of last Sunday's protest, live-streamed by organiser and anti-vaxxer Graham Carey on Facebook, showed protesters engaging in disgusting and untrue 'paedophile' slurs outside the openly-gay Tánaiste's address.

Carey is one of a number of anti-vaxxers who has been involved in protests outside the private addresses of politicians.

The homes of Health Minister Stephen Donnelly and former Health Minister Simon Harris were also targeted previously.

Other well-known anti-vaxxers present at last weekend's protest include Andy Heasman and Darragh O'Flaherty.

When the Sunday World called to Carey's home in Finglas on Dublin's northside on Wednesday to ask him to discuss the protest, he declined.

"I'm looking to speak with Graham Carey," our reporter said as Carey answered his door.

"Who are you?" Carey asked.

When our reporter identified himself, Carey snapped: "Don't come back here. Don't ever come back here. Get off … get off my property."

After our reporter interjected that he wished to speak with Carey about last Sunday's protest, he responded: "Don't ask me nothing. Go onto me Facebook. All the information is there."

Carey was not one of the protesters who joined in the 'paedophile' chants outside Mr Varadkar's home.

However he is heard saying on tape: "It's Leo Varadkar's house … the treasonous snake.

"I don't think his girlfriend's going to be too happy. No wait, he's the girlfriend. I don't think his boyfriend will be too happy.

"People believe Leo's a fiddler."

The Sunday World also called to an address, previously given in court by Andy Heasman, but we were told he no longer resides at that address,

Heasman, who is clearly visible on Carey's video, was sentenced to two months in prison in December of last year for refusing to wear a face mask correctly on a public bus.

A third address visited by the Sunday World was given in court previously by protester Darragh O'Flaherty but he was not present. He appeared in the District Court in March charged with breaching security at Leinster House.

On Graham Carey's Facebook page this week he described as false accusations that he is associated with the Far Right or that the protest at Leo Varadkar's house was homophobic.

"If anyone publishes my name with lies beside it like (far right) I'll be suing yizzzzz," he wrote.

And defending Sunday's protest, he posted: "Just for the record, we had two gay protesters there yesterday, one suspected gay protester, the mother of a gay son was there also.

"We were not there to judge our brother in his personal life.

"We were there for answers to the questions we have - which are, in Leo's case, numerous."

In another comment, he wrote: "This is a low grade hit job attempt with a little joke about Leo and Matt ffs (for f**k's sake).

"Yiz would swear we burned a cross outside his gaffe the way yiz are carrying on."

Addressing the protest this week, Taoiseach Micheál Martin described it as 'vile and shocking,' adding that protests which target politician's private homes have 'no place in our democracy.'

He said: "I think we as a country tolerate political debate, we tolerate protests and people are entitled to protest in a proper way.

"But I think invading the privacy of an individual, where they live, their homes, particularly in this case, not just the Tánaiste, but everybody in the neighbourhood as well, there's no necessity for that type of aggressive protest in a residential area."

A number of other politicians across all parties also publicly condemned the protest, calling out attendees for their 'repulsive behaviour'.

Fine Gael Minister Simon Harris tweeted: "Sickening, repulsive, disgusting behaviour outside the home of @LeoVaradkar and Matt.

"It has no place in a democracy, must be condemned by all & called out for what it is.

"Efforts to dehumanise politicians contributes to this. Vile on so many levels."

Sinn Féin's Mary Lou McDonald also commented on the protest, tweeting: "The homophobic, bigoted intimidation witnessed at the home of Leo Varadkar today is outrageous and shameful. The perpetrators must be held to account."

During last week's protest, Carey vowed that further protests will take place at politicians' homes.

"If anyone wants to get involved now next week, you'se are more than welcome to get involved by contacting one of these good people.

"We're the only ones who know where we're going to be.

"If yiz want to come along, yiz are more than welcome.

"We don't know where we're going to go next week.

"It could be back here, it could be back to Donnelly's, it could be over to Micheál's, it could be f**king anywhere, over to May Lou's, it could be anywhere.

"You decide on the day where we go."

Carey also issued an appeal for help in sourcing 'a coach' saying there would twice or three times as many people present next week.

In relation to the protest, Gardaí have confirmed investigations are ongoing to determine whether any offences were committed.

In a statement released to the Sunday World, they said: "An Garda Síochána is investigating protest activity, which occurred in Dublin 8, on 19th September 2021, to establish if any activity, during that event, amounted to a breach of the criminal law."
