Animal lovers have reacted in fury after the DSPCA posted a shocking story on Facebook about a beautiful Lurcher puppy that was “thrown into a canal to die”.

According to the post, a man who was out fishing saw someone throw a large black sack into a canal last week.

“He just felt something was very wrong and so he waited and fished it out with a net,” the post reads.

“Tucked inside the bag was a 10-12 week old Lurcher puppy. The very kind gentleman brought him home and kept him safe for a few days before bringing him up to the DSPCA.

“River had pressure sores on his back legs most likely from lying on hard surfaces. They will heal over the next few weeks with soft bedding. His big brown eyes would just melt your heart.

“To think that he was thrown into a canal to die is just not worth thinking about and is completely heart breaking. River is doing well and getting lots of care, cuddles and soft blankets, a far cry from what was in store for him.”

People have taken to the comments section to express their disgust.

“Whoever is responsible isn't even human. Unbelievable. Beautiful puppy,” one person has written.

Another has added: “Ah God how can anyone do such a cruel thing, the poor little darling, but thank God he's in good hands now and hopefully get a home with someone who will show him love instead of that cruelty.”

“Wtf is wrong with people? how can they live with themselves doing this ??? So lucky that he was found bless I pray he gets a good home an gets better now. Every animal deserves a safe and loving home,” one added.

“Sick to my stomach reading another story of animal cruelty. Hope karma will hit this very evil person!! Huge thanks to the fisherman for checking out the bag and for saving this gorgeous pup. What a sad start to River’s life.”
