2018 Nivei Rioja Doca Blanco

By Jean Smullen

Keep an eye out for Lidl's great value Wine Cellar range, back in store from Thursday, July 15. This week I'm taking in two continents for my favourites.

2018 Nievi Rioja DOCa Blanco €8.99

Rioja is best known for red wine, but did you know they also make white? The native white grape is called Viura and to that they have added seven different white grape varieties, including tempranillo blanco, sauvignon blanc and chardonnay. This Spanish white has lots of ripe peachy aromas and tastes of peach and pear. Rioja has a warm climate so all that sunshine means tons of ripe fruit flavours. Great value at this price, enjoy with a plate of olives and cheese.

2019 How to Avoid Everything €9.99

This wine comes from Stellenbosch and is produced by a South African winery called Spier. It is made from merlot, an early ripening grape with the least amount of tannin. Red wine made from merlot has ripe plum aromas and tons of summer fruit flavours and a hint of spice. If you like cooking outdoors, throw some spare ribs on the braii (South African for BBQ), and enjoy them served with this juicy, fruity red wine.
