COUNTRY music star Lisa McHugh says she's always been "obsessed with babies" - and now she's looking forward to having one of her own.

Stunning Lisa this week announced that she and her fiancé Nathan Khan are expecting their first child, due next January.

And yesterday, in an exclusive interview with the Sunday World, the singer spoke about her joy at finding love and becoming pregnant.

"It's something that you can never really take for granted or assume it's going to happen, so we're delighted that we've been lucky enough, thankfully," Lisa said of her pregnancy.

"Everything was planned for us to get married this year, and then we had to reschedule with everything that is going on. We then just wanted to go with the flow and see if what was meant to be would be…and we were lucky enough to get the amazing news.

"It's something that I've always wanted. I've always been obsessed with babies. I've been lucky enough to have eight nieces and nephews and I'm obsessed with them. It's something that Nathan has wanted and dreamed of as well, to start our own family.

"The pregnancy has been great. Apart from a bit of tiredness I have been fantastic, I've been feeling amazing, so I'm very, very lucky because I know it can be so different. For me, thankfully, it's been a breeze.

"It's been very hard to keep it to ourselves for the last four-and-a-half months. I've been like a recluse hiding at home to avoid people. We just wanted to enjoy the first while ourselves, because it's such a special experience and time for us.

"But it's coming to the point where I can't actually hide it anymore, as the baby is starting to show. So we decided to share the news then with everyone.

"And now that the news is out and we're actually able to talk about it, we're so excited all over again. Nathan is over the moon and counting the days."

Lisa and Nathan have been together three years after meeting by chance on a night out in Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh, where they both live.

"We met on a night out," Lisa recalls. "It was all very spur-of-the-moment. I was out with friends, he was out with friends, and we randomly bumped into each other and that was it…the rest is history."

Nathan had no idea at the time that Lisa was a country music star.

"That's what made it even better," she says. "He wasn't a country music fan. But he's coming around to it, I think. He has no choice in the matter now."

While the Covid-19 lockdown has taken its toll on relationships over the last two years, Lisa says it cemented the bond between herself and Nathan, who surprised her on a beach last August by popping the question.

"It was definitely a great thing for us, especially as I wasn't busy on tour, because it's very hard to maintain a relationship while you're on the road," she says of lockdown.

"It has given me time now to enjoy pregnancy, to enjoy starting our family and to concentrate on my personal life. Three or four years ago it would have been a bit more of a struggle to take as much time off, or any time off really, with being on tour so much. It really does feel now is the right time to be starting our family.

"Lockdown was the end of so many relationships, but thankfully it brought us together and made us a lot stronger and here we are ready to get married and have a baby."

The striking couple now plan to tie the knot next year. "Because things are still so uncertain everywhere, we're going for next year. But at the minute all of our focus is on the task in hand, concentrating on getting baby here, healthy and safely. Then we'll concentrate on the wedding, but we're aiming for next year, definitely.

"I have the dress, which I found when I went out shopping with my mum and sister on a visit home to Glasgow last year. It was lovely to have that opportunity to go to the shops because it's a dream for every bride to have the experience of trying on so many beautiful wedding dresses.

"Now I have everything sorted. I have everything ready to go…just not a 100 per cent guarantee that we can go ahead with the day we want, so that's what we're waiting for. And, of course, our baby will be at the wedding, which will make it even more special."

Lisa plans to release a new country-pop album and go back on tour when restrictions on live entertainment are fully lifted. "I'll be back to work carrying a backpack with a baby inside," she joked.
