Back on the block Sorry Bennifer, but the ex factor won't work

The sequel is just never as good as the original

Ex marked the spot for Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck last week.

The former Hollywood power couple is reportedly back on almost two decades after splitting.

And while the world and its mother seems to be rooting for Bennifer 2.0, I can't help but think that newly single Jenny from the Block must be off her rocker to reopen the ex files.

Bennifer fever first broke out when the actor was spotted exiting the singer's SUV with what looked suspiciously like an overnight bag earlier this month, and spiked this week after the pair were snapped holidaying together at a luxury ski resort in Montana, where Ben is believed to own a chalet.

To be fair, I'd probably get back with my ex, too, if there was an outside chance of a summer ski holiday - but back to Bennifer, and the nutso international reaction to their maybe-reconciliation after 17 years.

As the saying goes, "the definition of stupidity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results".

Well, tell that to Gigli co-stars Ben (48) and Jen (51) , who previously dated from 2002 until 2004, even almost making it down the aisle before the wedding was called off just four days before the big day in 2003.

But if J.Lo's rom-coms from The Wedding Planner to The Back Up Plan have taught us anything it's to demand a happily ever after even where none exists.

It would account for the obsessive lobbying for Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston to back together and the constant scrutiny of exes Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield, despite all parties having long since moved on - because if the world's most perfect-on-paper couples can't make it, what hope is there for the rest of us of a Hollywood ending?

Perhaps Jen - who split from fiancé Alex Rodriguez last month - and Ben - who split from Knives Out star Ana de Armas in January - have pulled off the impossible by remaining pals with their ex.

If they thought the "excessive media attention" which reportedly led to the cancellation of their wedding first time round was bad, however, that's nothing compared to the age of Twitter, where #Bennifer was trending all week.

Some have speculated that, after more than a year of swiping left in our jim-jams, we're all just living vicariously through the iconic noughties couple, yearning for our carefree youth.

A lot of water has passed under the bridge (not to mention two marriages and five kids between them) since Bennifer was first a thing, and who knows, maybe the couple will eventually make it down the aisle.

Matt Damon, for one, gave the reunion his seal of approval when he told the Today show on Tuesday: "I hope it's true".

When it comes to the ex factor, my motto has always been: 'Ben there, done that'. So don't do it, J.Lo - we all know the sequel is never as good as the original.
