Two people have died and a child is being assessed for serious injuries after a bus collision in Cork.

The incident occurred at the Strand Road outside Monkstown in Cork shortly before 2pm today.

It is understood the bus collided with a wall and a number of cars with a pedestrian then being injured by debris from the vehicles.

Gardaí and paramedics raced to the scene with major traffic diversions being put in place.

It is understood one person has been pronounced dead at the scene though initial indications are that this could be linked to a cardiac arrest rather than injuries sustained in the collision.

Gardai are following a line of inquiry that indicates the driver of the bus suffered a medical trauma and lost control of the vehicle.

A second person, a pedestrian, was critically injured.

Paramedics worked at the scene to assist the person pending a transfer to Cork University Hospital (CUH).

But tragically, this person was also pronounced dead this afternoon.

A third individual, a youngster, suffered suspected back injuries in the incident. The injuries involved, while believed to be serious, are not reported to be life-threatening.

Motorists have been urged to avoid the area.

Initial reports are that up to three parked cars were damaged in the collision.

Earlier, a garda spokesman appealed for witnesses to contact them.

"A bus collided with a pedestrian and a number of parked vehicles during the incident. The driver of the bus, a male aged in his 50s, died during the incident. His body remains at the scene.
