A man is being quizzed by gardai this morning after a Garda car was rammed in Galway on Wednesday night.

The man, who is in his 40s, was arrested yesterday after the incident that took place in the Knocknacarra area at approximately 8.30pm.

Gardaí had observed a black Audi A5 car at Altan on the Western Distributor Road. When they activated the blue lights and approached the car, the driver drove at speed directly towards the marked patrol car.

Gardaí had to take evasive action but the driver of the Audi rammed into the front passenger side of their vehicle.

The Audi car then fled at high speed out onto the Western Distributor Road. Gardaí followed in the direction the car had fled and requested assistance. Gardaí were then alerted to an abandoned vehicle in the Knocknacarra area.

Two gardaí were injured but did not require hospitalisation.

Gardaí yesterday arrested a man in his 40s at Galway Courthouse “in connection with endangerment”.

He currently detained at North Western Regional Headquarters in Murrough under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.
