Thank you: Danny O’Reilly of The Coronas is headlining TV show for Ireland’s frontline workers

IRISH rock star Danny O'Reilly yesterday joked how he was surprised that his "unfortunately named" band The Coronas got the call to headline a TV special to celebrate frontline workers.

The Great Big Irish Thank You show, which will be broadcast on Virgin Media One next Sunday week, October 4, will also recognise the fighting spirit of Irish people in the coronavirus battle.

"We're delighted to be part of The Great Big Irish Thank You. With the way 2020 has gone so far, it's definitely our biggest gig of the year," Danny says.

"We know people need a distraction from coronavirus so, having the most unfortunate band name in the world right now, we were surprised when we got the call.

"Seriously though, it's set to be a great night and we're planning a few surprises, we can't wait." Christy Dignam of Aslan is also among the performers, while there will be interviews with celebrity guests such as our Sunday World columnist Daniel O'Donnell.

"I am proud to be involved, to help thank the people of Ireland for all their courage during these dark days of Covid-19," Daniel says.

crisis

This special 90-minute show is an Independent.ie initiative and will be produced by Tyrone Productions for Virgin Media.

It will shine a light on Irish people who responded to this crisis above and beyond the call of duty.

Healthcare workers overseas returned to the frontline, people checked in on neighbours, supermarkets stayed open and public transport continued to run.

Amanda Dunleavy of Tyrone Productions said: "Covid-19 has asked so much of the Irish people and this is our chance through story and song to say a huge thank you to all those who have supported and continue to support each other."

Independent News & Media publisher Peter Vandermeersch told how newspapers in the group that includes the Sunday World have been putting a spotlight on "the biggest story of our lifetime: Covid-19 and its impact on society".

He said the newspapers and Independent.ie have focused on the people who were fighting the consequences of the pandemic - nurses and doctors, people who clean care homes or keep elderly people company, bus drivers and supermarket workers, newspaper sellers and delivery people.

"These people are the real heroes of this crisis. Our society kept functioning because of them."

Hosted by Muireann O'Connell The Great Big Irish Thank You, sponsored by Cadbury, 7UP Free, Arachas, Starbucks and Doritos will air on Virgin Media One on October 4 at 10pm.
