There has been a surge in demand for dogs amongst singletons during the various COVID-19 lockdowns according to the DSPCA who have issued a 'You can’t buy love but you can rescue it' message to all prospective dog lovers this Valentine’s weekend.

Suzanne McGovern, who is Corporate Relations Manager at the DSPCA said: “Sight hounds, such as Lurchers and Greyhounds are proving really popular breeds for single people who are looking for the perfect companion”.

Sight hounds are well suited to city and apartment living. They are so affectionate, low maintenance and actually don’t need as much exercise as you would think. They love to laze about and curl up on the sofa with you, meaning they’re the perfect match this Valentine’s Day! Please consider a rescue pet as your first choice, they have so much love to give.

The well-known Irish Animal Charity, which marked its 180 years anniversary in 2020, has got some ‘forever’ residents who have been unlucky in love and now live permanently at the DSPCA where they get spoilt by the site staff and volunteers. George the Pig, Elvis the Goat and Peru the cat are some of the rescued animals that have not found their forever homes but online lottery company Lottoland have recently stepped in to become the first corporate company to sponsor one of these long term residents. Elvis the goat will receive the loving care that he deserves (plus of course some extra love and treats for Valentine’s Day!).

Graham Ross, Country Manager for Lottoland Ireland said “We LOVE being partnered with the DSPCA, especially at this special time when we all appreciate those we’re closest too. For many Irish people in the last year, their pet has an invaluable companion, helping to take the edge of the lockdown blues.

"We’re delighted to support the DSPCA’s Valentine's initiative with proceeds from our Win-Win Charity Lotto, where 10 percent of sales or 15 cents in every €1.50 bet placed goes to this fantastic charity.

"As well as our new sponsorship of ELVIS the Goat, we’re really proud that our funds with go towards the running of the DSPCA’s Mobile Veterinary Clinic, providing a hugely valuable and visible subsidised veterinary service to low income communities around Dublin, helping over 1,900 pet owners each year who are struggling financially to take care of their pets’ medical needs. What’s not to love about that?”
