The landlocked beauty that is Kilkenny is one of the country’s most tourism-rich counties with a whole host of amenities to exhilarate and entertain domestic and foreign tourists in equal measure.

Most of the things to do you will already know about so I’ve picked a few fun things that are not yet on everyone’s ‘to do’ list in — or have been given a recent upgrade.

1: Ireland’s oldest sport

The recently-renovated Malzards bar in the village of Stoneyford in Kilkenny brings together a local community in a lively celebration of storytellers, musicians and hurling enthusiasts. The family (who have run the bar for 200 years) run a ‘Hurling Experience’ where visitors can learn the skill of Ireland’s oldest game.

2: Explore irish wooden mills

Visitors who want a truly authentic experience of an 800-year-old woollen mill can explore Cushendale Woollen Mill in this wonderful glass surround showroom, filled with all of Cushendale’s luxury woollen blankets, throws, scarfs and gifts.

3: Michelin star restaurants

Kilkenny is home to two Michelin Star restaurants. Both The Lady Helen and Campagne take pride in local sourcing thanks to the bounty of excellent produce right on their doorstep.

Located in the beautiful Mount Juliet Estate, from the moment you enter the Lady Helen everything is grandeur personified. Head Chef John Kelly and his team are passionate and dedicated to serving the very best produce, all of which can we sampled in their seven-course Signature Tasting Menu with Wine Pairings.

Five-Star Campagne was established in 2008. Here the emphasis is on serving food that is based on high-quality seasonal produce, with French influences, in a relaxed and comfortable dining area.

4: Medieval mile

Take a ‘Medieval Kilkenny Tour’ with Kilkenny’s new audio guide (it can be streamed to your smartphone or tablet). This innovative audio story recounts the beginnings of the city in the 6th Centur and follows the fascinating history of the city through the centuries.

5: Falconry experience
