Review: Tony Hawks Pro Skater 1 & 2 ★★★★★
Over the last three years, we’ve seen so many classic games either reworked or remastered. It may be the fact that a new generation of consoles are on the horizon or it could be down to the success of the recent remakes of Crash Bandicoot, Spyro and Final Fantasy.
Tony Hawks Pro Skater 1 & 2 is the latest vintage game to be released and it’s almost entirely like the original. For those unfamiliar with the concept, you skate around different levels, pulling off crazy tricks, attempting to satisfy as many objectives as you can within a two-minute time limit.
As you complete the challenges on offer, you unlock further levels and cosmetics to customise your character. That is all there is to it. No clutter or feeling forced into a battle pass. An effective and simple game from a time gone by.
Visually, it has been improved tenfold and stands up fairly well to games that are released nowadays. The soundtrack has been updated with a more modern twist while still keeping the same gritty identity the franchise is famed for.
Your character does level up as you progress further in the game. This has an affect on how long you can hang in the air, your ability to ollie and the stability of your grinds. Having the two games bundled is brilliant, as you start to work your way through one, your character is much better for the other game.
There is an online mode which concentrates on what made the originals so great. The easiest way to get into multiplayer is to just run a list of modes in which you are given objectives like being the first to achieve a set score, or who can achieve the highest combo in a limited timeframe.
By focusing on what made the first couple of games so revering, and blocking out the elements that made the later games so tedious to play, Activision has reignited an old-school classic filled with nostalgia.
