Senator Eileen Flynn has given birth to a baby girl, she has announced.

The Donegal politician revealed the news in a Facebook post.

“Lacey Mary Whyte - Born at 6:21 am on 16.9.2021,” she wrote alongside a picture of her cradling her new charge.

“Liam and I are over the moon. Lacey and I are well. Thank you to everyone for your well wishes and congratulations.”

Numerous congratulations have greeted the post with one person writing: “What a beautiful child and name. You will definitely have a mother who you will be so proud of!”

Another added: “Oh my god she's stunning. Congratulations to you and Liam. Billie will be delighted.”

One other person has added: “Welcome to the world Lacey, may you enjoy a life filled with good health & many blessings.”

Senator Eileen Flynn was nominated to the Seanad by Taoiseach Micheál Martin in 2020 and is the first Traveller/Mincéir to the serve in the Houses of the Oireachtas.

Senator Flynn made history when she became the first Traveller to take a seat in the Seanad when she was just 30 years of age.

When elected she pledged to "break barriers" to help marginalised communities, lessons she she told The Irish Independent at the time that she had learned from her mother Mary who died from pneumonia at 48 in October 2000.

"She's not someone I speak about an awful lot, but I feel her with me, you know, and every choice that I've ever made in my life, I always kind of look to her for advice, if that makes sense,” she said.

"Some of my mother's sayings I always hold close to my heart, like 'nobody knows the shoe is cutting them, only the person that's wearing the shoe', and what she meant by that was 'don't judge other people'. She didn't want people to stereotype Travellers, and nor do I."
