After more than a year minus dinner parties, entertaining family and friends at home is back with a bang (or even a jab) this season. So we turned to tablescaping expert Maria Reidy of Signature Rentals for her top tips on how to wow.

"I love taper candles to set the mood," she says. "But it's really important to use 100pc wax. If you buy cheap ones they may splatter all over your linen and ruin your table. Mix your candle size and candlestick heights to create layers of light."

Colourful glasses and garden greenery are just two of the tabletop trends this outdoor summer, but Maria, who has designed and managed events for clients worldwide, warns against flash-in-the-pan dinnerware.

"When investing in forever items, it's better not to choose trends that will move on. Be wary of trend-led pieces like gold and rose gold cutlery. The table must also not compete with its surroundings. Ask yourself is it a contemporary setting, rustic or old world?"

"The most important part of any dinner party is the conversation so the table décor should be below or above eye level," adds Maria. "Ultimately guests must feel comfortable at the table to enjoy their meal."
