The Suzuki Jimny was a history lesson to adore

Wait until I get my hands on that Santa Claus bloke. The one thing I asked him for in my letter this year wasn’t parked outside my door yesterday when I woke up!

Of all the cars I have driven this year one made me smile so much I had asked the big man for one for Christmas.

The car – or commercial vehicle – I am talking about is the funky new Suzuki Jimny. Firstly, I have to admit, I had no idea I had booked myself into a small, box-like 4x4 commercial vehicle when I agreed to take the Jimny for a week-long test drive. Result!

It was only when I was handed the keys that I noticed that there was no back seats and, it immediately dawned on me, that there was no way I could pack the two kids into this for the school run.

There was a time when I would have packed half of my son’s football team into to back but those days are long gone, and rightly so. So I am stuck with what I can only describe as a Matchbox version of a Jeep Wrangler for the week, leaving the wife to do the school runs. Result!

Step inside and you’ll need to turn your watch back 20 years because the little Jimny is as basic as they come. There is not a touch-screen in sight and I was nearly digging out my old CD collection to slot into the disk player for a few tunes.

I was even surprised to find it came with electric windows, it is that basic inside. But I am a man of simple pleasures and it took me no time at all to fall in love with this piece of motor history.

For anyone thinking of starting their own business in the new year, or for businesses out there in the market for a cheap, small commercial vehicle, this little Jimny is absolutely brilliant.

It was fitted with a popper off-road low-ratio gearbox that allows you to switch between four-wheel drive (4WD), a lower-range 4WD and ordinary two-wheel drive – ideal if you have to make a delivery to the church at the top of Croagh Patrick.

Around town it is brilliant to drive, however, I did find if you really want to get up to motorway speeds it does struggle to get up to 120km/h. Having said all that, I just loved it for all its simplicity.

If I ever do start my own business it will be the first thing on my list. The little Jimny is certainly a niche market for buyers but for a stating price of €20,995 you just can’t beat it.
