New motor offers buyers best of both electric and petrol worlds

There will always be an appetite around the world when it comes to supercars. Footballers, basketball players, music stars - they all love get behind the wheel of them to show off their hot wheels.

Can you imagine for one minute sitting in Puerto Banus in Marbella and not hearing the sound of a V8 or V12 engine purring around the port with some poser at the wheel showing off?

But there is a massive shift in the supercar industry with even the likes of Ferrari and Porsche using the best of both worlds by combining the traditional internal combustion engine with some sort of electric power.

BMW were one of the first to do it when it introduced its i8 model a few years back. The German premium brand was able to match the top speeds of the best-known Italian supercars by combining a 1.5-litre petrol engine from a MINI Copper with an electric motor.

Since then, many manufacturers have followed suit and even the likes of Skoda is jumping on the bandwagon with its new Octavia RS iV.

Like its Golf GTI sibling, the Octavia RS has had a massive cult following for many years and some of those who own one will tell you that it is even better than the Golf.

Earlier this year I got behind the wheel of the diesel RS - which actually has more torque than the petrol version - and it certainly didn't disappoint.

But the new RS iV takes this pocket rocket to a new level, all while doing its bit for the environment, by combining petrol and electric power.

On the outside, the new Octavia RS iV really catches the eye. My test car was a stunning silver-coloured machine with black trimmings, including black alloy wheels, that really made it stand out in the crowd when I first laid eyes on it.

There's a bespoke front grille and rear spoiler coupled with black mirror caps to give it an even sportier look too.

But it's underneath the stunning exterior where Skoda has made the biggest changes, all while doing its bit for the environment.

The Octavia RS iV comes with a 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine matted with a 13kWh lithium-ion battery pack and 85kW electric motor.

Firing it up for the first time was strange to say the least, as I was expecting to hear those familiar grunts normally associated with a hot-hatch.

But nothing. The Octavia RS iV goes straight into electric mode, which the company claims is good enough for 60km on the range and will work at speeds up to 140km/h.

A 3.6kW wall-box will charge the battery in just over three and a half hours, while using a domestic three-pin wall socket will take close to four hours to charge to 80 per cent capacity.

A full charge in this mode can take up to five hours or more.

Still though, the Octavia RS iV offers the best of both worlds, as you can't forget about saving the planet if you like and drive like it a madman (without breaking the law ) if you feel like it.

It seems that this combination of electric power and smaller petrol engines could be the future of the supercar.

If it is the future, Skoda has nailed it with this new RS iV.
