Impressive: The Peugeot 508 PHEV

IT TAKES a lot to impress both of the Motormouth team at the same time but we can't even begin to tell you how 'Hy-ly' impressed we were with the new Peugeot Hybrid range.

In the last couple of weeks we have got behind the wheel of the new 508 Hybrid and the new 3008 Hybrid and we were both blown away by the two new models.

First up was the extremely handsome Peugeot 508 PHEV, which is without doubt one of the best looking, if not the best, cars in its class.

On the outside, apart from a some subtle 'Hybrid' badging there is little to distinguish it from its fossil-fuel sibling. There is a second filler cap on the passenger side directly opposite to the petrol cap to plug into a charge point and, apart from that, it's much the same.

On the inside, too, there very little to tell the models apart and it comes with a really-neat looking interior that is now common place in most Peugeots. We are big fans of the piano-style toggle switches that really set these models apart from the rest.

Both the all-new 508 Hybrid and 508 SW (estate) Hybrid are built on Peugeot's EMP2 platform. Through clever engineering of the battery pack, Peugeot has achieved zero compromise in boot space or versatility compared to conventional 508 and 508 SW models. The all-new 508 Hybrid comes with 487-litres of boot space, with the 508 SW Hybrid providing 530-litres of load capacity.

The main difference you will find is that this new 508 Hybrid model combines the 180bhp 1.6-litre PureTech petrol engine with an 80kW (110bhp) electric motor on the front axle, for a total power output of 225bhp.

It uses an 11.8kWh battery, with a full recharge taking less than two hours with a 7kW on board charger (optional depending on version).

According to official WLTP tests, Peugeot claim the 508 HYBRID returns 1.3 litres/100km, with ultra-low CO2 emissions of just 29g/km, which puts the model into the €170 per year tax bracket. Impressive to say the least. The company also claim that you can get up to 54km on pure electric charge.

However, as we all know in real day-to-day driving conditions you are never going to get anywhere near those figures and we certainly didn't come close during our week-long test drives.

Secondly, despite never actually seeing the full 54km after numerous charges it did come close. This means that if we were driving into the office on a daily basis we both should get nearly two days on a full electric charge. God only know when we will be back in the office at this stage anyway but it would certainly make a lot of sense for a business-type person who has a short daily commute.

Sadly, it does come with a rather large premium over its petrol and diesel siblings.

The entry-level model in the diesel range costs €31,170 while prices for the Hybrid range cost (€38,245) Allure, (€41,245) GT Line and (€45,745) GT but the cost savings over the year might just balance itself out.

The second model we tested was the new 3008 Hybrid. This is a big shout from the Motormouth team when we say that this is one of our favourite SUVs on the road at the moment and both of us are considering buying the new 3008 Hybrid as our family car next year.

That will tell you how highly we rate this model. The petrol/diesel 3008 already had everything that you could possibly ask for in a family SUV and now Peugeot has taken it a step further with the new Hybrid model.

Unlike its 508 sibling, the 3008 comes in two plug-in variants - Hybrid2 and Hybrid4.

The slightly more expensive Hybrid4 system is a more powerful version of the drive-train found in the 508 Hybrid, with an additional rear-mounted electric motor powering the rear axle (for all-wheel drive), a larger 13.2kWh battery pack and also a 200hp derivative of the 1.6-litre PureTech petrol engine found in the 508 GT.

Prices for the new 3008 Hybrid2 start from €37,345 while the more powerful Hybrid4 model costs €45,150 for the GT Line and €48,750 for the GT. If you are thinking of changing over to a hybrid model in the new year this is definitely one to give some serious thought to if you are looking for a family SUV that has got everything you will ever need.

Meanwhile, Peugeot last week unveiled its latest 3008 model. Its inspired new design sets the tone for a new era of modernity with ever more elegance, a redesigned front end, new Full LED rear lights, new body colours and a new "Black Pack" option.

The new SUV Peugeot 3008 perfectly embodies the power of choice, an idea that brand holds very dear and it comes with a rechargeable hybrid engine, two or four-wheel drive and petrol or diesel engines, combining driving pleasure and efficiency.

Without compromising on intelligent technologies, the new SUV Peugeot 3008 comes with the latest-generation driving aids, as well as a new Peugeot i-Cockpit with a new high-quality display headset and a new 10-inch high-definition touch screen.

To complete these extensive experiences, it has the new commercial range structure which was recently introduced on the Peugeot 308. This is made up of three levels of finishes with, for each of them, an additional set of equipment known as a "pack".

The new 3008 will be on sale in Ireland early next year, no pricing details are available as of yet.
