It baffles me sometimes that while most of us are doing our bit to save the environment these days and turning to some form of hybrid car that manufacturers are still producing gas guzzling, high-performance cars.

Don’t get me wrong, I am still a boy trapped in a fat man’s body when it comes to hot-hatches and performance cars and I still love getting behind the wheel of them when I get a chance.

Obviously the manufacturers still see a big future for them and there is still a massive market for them across Europe or else they would all be left to rust in peace.

Hot on the heels of the new Skoda Octavia, which we raved about on these pages a few weeks ago, comes a new version of its high-performance RS model.

Strangely enough though, the Octavia RS model I was test-driving was not a 2-litre petrol powerhouse, but a 2-litre diesel nonetheless.

Most real petrol-heads would probably frown at the idea of a high-performance diesel engine, but it has been tried and trusted for many years in the form of the Volkswagen Golf GTD that has a huge band of followers — just look around the Irish roads and you will see thousands of them.

Believe it or not, diesels engines have more torque than petrol engines and can be just as much fun as a fast petrol if it is fitted to the right car.

That is certainly the case with the new Octavia RS 200bhp diesel.

The new RS is, in many ways, a practical car, as it is spacious enough for a family of five, can be driven like a normal day-to-day car or can be unleashed with the flick of your right foot if you fancy having a bit of fun.

On the inside, the Octavia’s cabin is extremely spacious and really well put together. Head and leg room is fantastic and it just feels so much bigger that you would be forgiven to think you were in its larger Superb sibling sometimes.

It comes as standard with an equipment list the length of your arm including: Climatronic dual-zone air conditioning, heated front seats, rear parking sensors, ‘COLUMBUS’ navigation system, 10-inch touch-screen display, eight speakers, cruise control including speed limiter, rear view camera, power folding exterior mirrors and a keyless entry/go system.

Fire up the button on the big diesel and she sounds so sweet. On the open road the Octavia RS handles brilliantly for a big lump of a car. Skoda claim that it will do 5.1l/100km but my fat right foot was too heavy to get anywhere close to that. It is matted to a seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox complimented with paddle shift if you really want to have a bit of fun.
