Grape Spy: Jean Smullen
This week, we recommend a posh white from the central vineyards in northern France and a great tasting low alcohol red, perfect for anyone watching their intake.
2019 JEAN-MAX ROGER MENETOU-SALON CUVÉE LE CHARNAY €15.60
Dunnes Stores have a terrific Sauvignon Blanc at the moment.
The grapes are grown on chalk soil in the region beside Sancerre, so wine is top class and similar in style, but at a more competitive price.
It has aromas of citrus fruit and when you taste it the acidity is quite restrained, with lovely subtle lime fruit flavours. Serve with grilled monkfish.
2021 Santa Rita De-Light Cabernet Sauvignon
2021 SANTA RITA DE-LIGHT CABERNET SAUVIGNON €12.50
Santa Rita 120 Reserva has added a new low alcohol red wine to its range. The De-light Cabernet Sauvignon has an ABV of 9pc. It’s made using the spinning cone method, a gentle technique which works well in reducing alcohol content.
This wine has lovely jammy black fruit flavours and at only 80 calories a glass, it’s perfect for anyone watching their weight. Widely available in Tesco and SuperValu. Serve with crispy Chilli Beef.
