2020 Dark Horse Merlot: €12

If you like plums, spice and chocolate flavours then you’re going to love this red. Made by winemaker Beth Liston, whose aim is to make reasonably priced wines that punch way above their weight and this Californian red certainly does that. Merlot is a grape we don’t see much of these days, which is a pity, it has very soft tannin and tons of soft plum fruit flavours.

This would be perfect with chicken or turkey, because of the lovely juicy fruit and the hint of spice. Look out for it in Tesco, Dunnes, Spar and Mac
