Grape Spy: Jean Smullen
A couple of Christmas wine stars to look out for when planning your Christmas menu
2021 Albert Glas Riesling Black Label : €19.99 Now €15
If you like fresh white wines with lower alcohol then try this German Riesling. Riesling, native to Germany makes wine with a beautifully fresh acidity a subtle citrus fruit flavours and a hint of honey. This wine is produced in Germany in the Pfalz region, and is elegant and classy.
Exclusive to SuperValu and on offer for €15.00 until Christmas; if you are looking for the perfect wine to serve with good quality smoked salmon, this is the one!
2020 Dark Horse Merlot: €12
If you like plums, spice and chocolate flavours then you’re going to love this red. Made by winemaker Beth Liston, whose aim is to make reasonably priced wines that punch way above their weight and this Californian red certainly does that. Merlot is a grape we don’t see much of these days, which is a pity, it has very soft tannin and tons of soft plum fruit flavours.
This would be perfect with chicken or turkey, because of the lovely juicy fruit and the hint of spice. Look out for it in Tesco, Dunnes, Spar and Mac
