Kinsale Mead Co Wild Red Mead.

This week I recommend a great Irish product and the world’s oldest alcoholic drink, Mead. It’s also Spanish Food & Wine Week and there are lots of events all over Ireland to take part in foodswinesfromspain.com

2019 Hijos del Alberto Gutierrez €14.95

This week make sure you enjoy some Spanish wine. Why not try this one available in O’Briens. This wine is made from Verdejo, Spain’s most fashionable white grape. Verdejo has been grown in Rueda in northern Spain since the 16th century. The genius of the grape is its unique palette of aromas and flavours. This has lovely citrus aromas with a hint of fennel, the intense peach fruit flavours are also backed by a refreshing acidity. A lovely fresh wine, it would be perfect served with a spicy Asian noodle salad.

Kinsale Mead Wild Red Mead €22.00

Now that there is an “R” in the month, why not try Kinsale Wild Red Mead with its beautifully balanced flavours of Wexford blackcurrants and sweet dark cherries. Mead is fermented honey and water. They use one third honey to two thirds local water As the evenings draw in, why not make a warming mulled mead. You need 2 teaspoons of honey, a selection of spices such as a cinnamon stick, star anise and a strip of orange peel gently warmed. Add a bottle of Mead and heat gently (do not boil or you will lose the alcohol!). You can buy Kinsale Mead in SuperValu and independent off licences.
