I’m not going to tell you how many hours a week I spend scrolling on Instagram, but needless to say, I check in a lot – which is also how I am constantly finding new wellness and beauty brands. Here are some of the very best Irish start-ups, many of which began life during the pandemic.

Olivia’s Haven Tea in the Orangery Soy Candle, €31 COLERAINE native Olivia Burns took a leap of faith and launched Olivia’s Haven just as the pandemic took hold. She worked throughout lockdown from her home studio to build the business one candle at a time and each candle tells a story, which I love. Olivia says: “My mum’s parents live on an old farm in the Northern Irish countryside and one of my absolute favourite rooms in their house is the citrus-smelling orangery. “My granny Sherrard uses this leafy, colourful space to catch up with friends over a lovely hot cup of tea. I created this candle to capture this room’s cheerful ambience.” Candles with sentimentality – adore.

Hawthorn Handmade Skincare Rejuvenating Facial Oil Frankincense + Myrrh, €25 THE philosophy is simple at Hawthorn Handmade Skincare: create skin nourishing products using only 100pc natural ingredients. If you want an intro into the brand, made in small batches in Co Mayo, then this gorgeous face oil is the place to start. The rich blend of frankincense and myrrh, renowned for their rejuvenating properties, is perfect for dry and mature skin.

Daughters of Flowers Warrior Sensitive Deodorant Cream, from €8.50 A LITTLE bit of magic goes into each and every one of the nourishing herbal offerings from this Cork-based botanical studio. The truly special skin and hair care treats are handmade each new moon using home-grown herbs and slow, traditional methods – so not your usual mass-produced supermarket stuff, then. I’m a big fan of the deodorant cream, which unlike some sprays, works with the body, rather than against it, to prevent a pong of perspiration. Perfect for sensitive underarms, just a pea-sized amount of the rose, cardamom and vanilla cream dries up any excess moisture to help keep you smelling of, well, roses all day long.

Irish Vegan Soapery Suaimhneas Soap, €5.95 SUAIMHNEAS means tranquillity in Irish, and the relaxing scent of this soap, from wicklowmarketplace.com, is sure to make your day a little more chilled. Packed with lavender and chamomile essential oils, it’s both vegan and cruelty-free, so you can lather up with a clean conscience.

This Makes Scents White Rose & Pink Pepper Candle, €10 I love this Wicklow brand more and more by the day. From the quirky candle names that have made me snort with laugher to the delectable scents, I also love that my nostrils are enjoying sustainable and eco-friendly fragrances. Start your collection off with this spicy floral creation, described by the team as what would happen “if Seal and the Spice Girls duetted — a kiss from a rose but with a bit of spice!”

S&S Soap Sisters Lavender Hand Soap, €6 I love a sister success story, and Sinéad Moloney and Samantha Murphy from Tipperary are definitely that. The pair set up their business, championing simple but luxurious beauty, during the pandemic and I’m already hooked. From bath salts to soaps, each product is handmade using natural ingredients. I fell hard for the lavender soap, my digits have never smelt better.

Colton Candles & Co Lavender Sleep Spray, €15 Named after her son, Dubliner Shauna Pollard first sparked the idea to create non-toxic candles due to an illness and jumped on the idea during the pandemic. Made up of 100pc soy wax and high-quality oils, everything from the scent to the packaging is completely dreamy. You’ll also fall into a deep and blissful slumber with this lavender sleep spray.
