The honest beauty column
I have finally succumbed to Covid, and believe me, it’s not pretty. Beyond the fatigue and the feeling that my throat is lined with broken glass, I’ve pretty much just wanted to curl up in a ball and wait for my isolation to be over. When you’re in the trenches, you’ll do anything to make yourself feel better, so here are the products that have given me, my hair and my skin a little lift.
Neom Organics Time to Sleep, €60
I WOULD have taken a horse tranquiliser if it meant having a peaceful night’s sleep, free of hacking coughs, but in reality, I slumbered with the help of this Scent To Sleep duo.
Featuring the brand’s cult bedtime products, the delicious Magnesium Body Butter and Pillow Mist sent me off to dreamland in no time.
The Beauty of Eczema Salty Soother, €17.99
WHEN I’m sick I usually do circuits between my bath and bed, and this time is no different.
Cracking open a tub of bath salts from the newest brand on the block — an all-natural, vegan, eczema and pregnancy-friendly range, I truly found some bliss by adding this mineral-rich blend into my bath time.
Repeatedly sinking into a heady cocktail of pink Himalayan blush, Dead Sea and epsom salts, infused with restoring oils to moisturise the skin, I may now be more mermaid than person.
Kotanical Stone Oil Diffuser, €59.95
WHEN I haven’t been snotting into tissues or having a coughing fit, I’ve been cranking up my stone diffuser and breathing in calming essential oils.
While I usually use my diffuser to emit sweet-smelling scents, I know that essential oils have been proven to help relieve stress and anxiety and promote good sleep, and now Irish brand Kotanical has launched a new oil, Immunity (€20), to help boost immunity to bacterial and viral illnesses and give your home a clean and calming ambience.
Redken All Soft Heavy Cream Treatment, €33.50
GREASY, limp hair will make any situation a hundred times worse, which is why there is nothing like the indulgence of a hair mask, especially when you’re feeling under the weather.
When it comes to thick hair, regular masks can often fall short — this wonder cream, however, is a rich, lush, deeply hydrating treatment to help smooth brittle, coarse locks.
Hush & Hush Plant Your Day, €55
SO MUCH more than a traditional protein powder, this power-packed plant-based vegan version is packed with a blend of supergreens, superfoods, fibre, antioxidants and vitamins. Basically all the goodness your body needs after a cold or flu.
Finca Skin Organics Moisturising Balm, €36
WHY is it that whenever I am sick my skin turns to parchment? If you’re battling a virus and dehydrated skin, this rich, ultra-moisturising balm soothes and hydrates for an extra feeling of TLC.
One for my rosacea gals, this entire range is suitable for both dry and acne-prone skin, so add it to your basket straight away.
L’Occitane Prestige Relaxing Candle, €67
EVEN the simple act of lighting a candle can lift my mood but honestly, L’Occitane candles work miracles.
Made with vegetable wax and sustainably sourced palm oil, the beautifully decorated candle diffuses the relaxing long-lasting scent of lavender from Provence combined with sweet orange, bergamot, mandarin and geranium.
