New mums must go softly on skin

Neelu White in her Dublin salon
Neelu at Neelu’s Beauty Salon has lots of experience of caring for women’s skin post pregnancy. Her advise is to be kind to yourself and remember that your skin has been through months of change so its bound to take months to return to its normal condition.
Throughout pregnancy and the months after, hormones ride a wild roller coaster of ups and downs. These changes are all due to the rise of certain hormones in the body and then after the birth, Progesterone and Oestrogen taking a nosedive. It doesn’t level out until your monthly period returns. But if you are breastfeeding then it won’t happen until you wean. Even then it can take months for your period and your skin to return to any sort of “normal”
Acne isn’t the only postpartum skin problem that appears. Chloasma, known as the mask of pregnancy, is another common occurrence during those nine months. Dark splotches can appear all over the face and remain there until after weaning as well.
Your sleep is disturbed, your energy levels are down which leads to lacklustre skin, and when you are so tired your nightly skincare routine is likely to get pushed to the backburner. Just because you are dealing with tons of blemishes doesn’t mean you have to struggle. A gentle cleanser is ideal for morning and night, followed by a moisturiser and an SPF. Many women find their skin to be extra sensitive after giving birth, so sticking with fragrance free, non-comedogenic products are the best. e.g., Le Mieux Phyto Marine Cleansing Lotion is great for dry or sensitive skin as is the Foaming Peptide Cleanser. The O2 Gel cleanser is very effective for acne prone skin. Vita C pads are a natural exfoliation or Perfect Renew Exfoliating and hydrating pads are gently effective.
Use Le Mieux Hyaluronic serum for hydration and 24 hr cream or Bio cell moisturiser for extra boost of hydration.
The key point in all this is sticking with it. In order for products and ingredients to work, you need to use them-- consistently.
