Cocktails worth a shot

Move over Tom Cruise, the Taste of Dublin festival is set to return to the capital next month with these tantalising tipples. By Deirdre Reynolds


Taste of Dublin may be famed for its foodie offerings, but as the festival returns to the Iveagh Gardens from September 1-5, 2021, it’s the Fercullen Irish Whiskey VIP Garden that’s top of our hit list.

Get into the spirit by trying just some of the mouth-watering cocktails specially created by Powerscourt Distillery for the food and drink spectacular.

1. FERCULLEN SIDECAR

Ingredients:

■ 40ml Fercullen Premium Blend Irish Whiskey

■ 20ml Cointreau

■ 20ml lime juice

■ Lime slice and zest to garnish

Method:

1. Place all the ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice.

2. Shake and double strain into a martini glass.

3. Garnish with lime.

2. FERCULLEN OLD FASHIONED

Ingredients:

■ 60ml Fercullen Premium Blend Irish Whiskey

■ 2ml Beara Bitters Orange

■ 2ml gorse syrup

■ 1 brown sugar cube

■ Soda water (optional)

■ Orange slice/gorse to garnish

Method:

1. Muddle the orange slice in an old-fashioned glass with the brown sugar cube, orange bitters and gorse syrup.

2. Add a large ice cube to the glass. Pour over the whiskey.

3. Top up with soda, if desired, and stir using a cocktail spoon.

4. Garnish with an orange slice and sprig of gorse.

3. FERCULLEN MINT JULEP

Ingredients:

■ 65ml Fercullen 8 Year Old Premium Blend

■ 12.5ml sugar syrup

■ 8-10 mint leaves

■ Crushed ice

■ Mint sprig to garnish

Method:

1. Muddle the mint leaves and sugar syrup in a cocktail shaker.

2. Add the whiskey to the cocktail shaker with ice, shake vigorously and strain into a rocks glass over crushed ice.

3. Garnish with a mint sprig.

4. POWERSCOURT PEAR ORCHARD

Ingredients:

■ 50ml Fercullen 8 Year Old Premium Blend

■ 70ml pear juice

■ 2ml Beara Bitters Smoked Pear

■ Pear slice to garnish

Method:

1. Place all the ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice.

2. Shake vigorously and strain into a chilled, sugar-rimmed coupe glass.

3. Garnish with some sliced pear and pear blossom, if available.

5. FERCULLEN BRAMBLE

Ingredients:

■ 50ml Fercullen Premium Blend Irish Whiskey

■ 20ml lime juice

■ 10ml sugar syrup

■ 20ml blackberry liqueur

■ Soda water or blackberry soda

■ Blackberries and lime slice to garnish

Method:

1. Muddle the blackberry in a rocks glass.

2. Place whiskey, lime juice, sugar syrup and blackberry liqueur into a cocktail shaker with ice.

3. Shake for 20 seconds and strain over the muddled blackberry and ice.

4. Top up with soda and garnish with lime.
