A large sum of cash was stolen from her home
A woman in her 90s was the victim of a “shocking and sickening” burglary at her home in Headford, Galway on Thursday night.
The 99-year-old was asleep in bed when raiders forced their way into her house and stole a large sum of cash.
“Gardaí are investigating a burglary from a residence in Headford, Co.Galway on 2nd March 2022,” a Garda spokesperson said.
“A sum of cash was taken from the property.
“No arrests have been made. Investigations are ongoing.”
Councillor Andrew Reddigton told Galway Bay FM how the woman’s home was only 50 metres from the local Garda station and called for Gardai to immediately allocate more resources to the North Galway area following the incident.
“I’m sick of talking about this at JPC meetings. I think that the senior Gardaí need to have a good talk to themselves,” he said.
“Would they like it if their neighbour or their mother was broken into last night?”
“And to consistently say to us at JPC meetings that there isn't a [need] for more Gardaí in these rural areas, it’s wrong, it’s not right.
“We have two amazing Gardai who are working here… but more often than not the station is free.”
“There's houses getting broken into, it’s happening on a regular basis and what is going to happen before we get more resources down here?,” he pleaded.
“To leave that house last night, I tell you it was a low point for me to see a woman that was 99 years of age, that was living in our area, and when she's supposed to be enjoying her life, and she’s very independent, I’ll tell you that much, she’s supposed to be enjoying her life and the few pound she had was taken.”
