In Limerick, €900,000 worth of cannabis and €45,000 worth of cash was seized during an operation targeting a drug distribution network in the south west.

Two Polish men are being held over a mammoth €1.35 million seizure in Co. Meath.

The pair, both in their 30s and with addresses in Clongriffin and Blanchardstown in Dublin, were arrested by officers from the Garda National Drugs & Organised Crime Bureau after they were stopped leaving a property in the Macetown area of Ashbourne, Co. Meath at noon on Friday.

Following the arrests, gardai carried out a search of a van and house on the property.

Inside the van a substantial quantity of cannabis herb was recovered which was packaged and ready for delivery.

A significant quantity of cannabis was also recovered in the property.

In a statement gardai said: “As part of ongoing investigations targeting persons suspected to be involved in organised crime, personal attached to the Garda National Drugs & Organised Crime Bureau (GNDOCB) carried out an operation in the Meath area.

“A vehicle and one premises were searched as part of this operation.

“67.5kg of Cannabis Herb (pending analysis) with a value of €1.35 million was discovered and seized.

“Two men, both aged in their 30s, have been arrested as part of this investigation and are currently detained at Finglas and Ashbourne Garda Stations under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act 1996.

“Investigations are ongoing.”

The haul was the second significant seizure of cannabis to take place on Friday.

A number of premises across Limerick city were searched as part of this operation.

Eight people, one woman aged 40s and seven men aged from their 20s - 70s, were arrested.

All eight were detained under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act 1996 at various Limerick city Garda Stations.

Gardai said investigations are ongoing.
