Friends and family have been paying tribute to teenager Charlotte Kelly, “a beautiful young girl taken long before her time”, who died in hospital days after a horror crash over the May bank holiday weekend.

The 17-year-old was seriously injured after the single-car collision at Meenformal, Glen, Carraig Airt, Co Donegal on Sunday night.

She had initially been rushed to Letterkenny University Hospital before being moved to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin where she sadly passed away yesterday.

Tributes have poured in for the teen, with one that reads: “Rest in peace beautiful Charlotte Kelly gone but never forgotten forever 17 u will be sadly missed.”

Another adds: "Charlotte Kelly we love you. Forever 17, our gorgeous girl."

Colm McDaid, who posts Letterkenny community news, said: "Late yesterday evening the sad news filtered through from Dublin that young Charlotte Kelly had sadly passed away.

"To her father and her mother and her brothers and sisters and extended family, can I take this opportunity to pass on our sincerest condolences from the Wider Oldtown Community, and everyone on this page.

"A beautiful young girl taken long before her time, now surrounded by her loving family members that have gone before her.

"This is a heart-breaking time for the Kelly family so I would ask you all to continue to keep them in your thoughts and prayers over the days, weeks and months ahead.

“To her young friends remember her in those happy times you had although short and always speak her name with a smile. I would like to thank everyone for your beautiful comments, your prayers and for all the support the family has been shown since young Charlotte had her accident.

“It shows what a community can do to comfort those in their time of need, and we as a community have been here before and have shown how close of a community we can be.
