A three-week-old baby is currently in intensive care in a Northern Ireland hospital with Covid, reports the BBC.

The news was reported on the Nolan Show on BBC Radio Ulster this morning.

There are no further details on where the baby is being treated or any other details due to Department of Health rules, which dictates they do not comment on individual cases.

Nolan reported on the case at the beginning of his show this morning, stating: “A three-week-old baby in intensive care in Northern Ireland with Covid.”

The Health Minister, Robin Swann, who was on the show, declined to comment on the case, but said that the virus was “no discriminator” when it comes to age.

He said: "I will not speak about any individual case because that wouldn't be appropriate in my position, but in regards to patients that we are supporting, our health service is doing its utmost.

"This virus is no discriminator against age, sex, religion nor political belief that's why our vaccine is there for people to come forward and get it.

"More people are going into intensive care which we haven't seen previously and a younger cohort are needing that intensive support as well.”

Two intensive care units in Northern Ireland are currently at their maximum capacity while others are close to full capacity.

Mr Swann also said he would discuss with the Executive limiting a proposed high street voucher programme to those who have been fully vaccinated.

He said: “It is something I will have the discussion and raise at the Executive committee certainly as regards to that incentive for people to come forward and get vaccinated.”
