For many Ulster residents, the smell of Eleventh night bonfires wafting across cities, towns and villages as part of the Twelfth of July celebrations is a familiar nasal experience, love it or loathe it.

Now a Northern Irish company has captured the scent of raging bonfires and smouldering pallets, presumably minus the whiff of melting tyres and flaming busted sofas – in a candle.

The Belfast firm, NI Parcels, say they created the £20 candle in response to social distancing measures which have been enforced due to the pandemic.

A description on the firm’s web page reads: ‘If you are unable to attend any of the July celebrations, due to covid, or travel restrictions this candle is perfect for you. It also makes a super gift for family and friends abroad.’

Their hope is that the candle will bring the aroma of bonfires into the homes of those who can't make it out to the Eleventh Night 'boney'.

They describe the candle as having been ‘lovingly handmade in Belfast’ with ‘smokey wood scents that will transport people to an Eleventh night celebration’.

A spokesman for NI Parcels said: “At NI Parcels we serve all communities in Northern Ireland and we celebrate diversity. The celebrations around the Twelfth of July are important to many people but understandably many are concerned about the pandemic this year.

“That’s why we have developed our ‘Smell of the Twelfth’ candle so that anyone can light up at home this year and celebrate the Twelfth without having to leave the safety of their own home.”

The spokesperson said the candle even comes with its own wooden pallet....

“We’re including a mini wooden pallet with each candle as these are so key to the event and we thought it would make a home celebration that little bit more authentic.”

The spokesman did concede the smell of a bonfire “might not offer the most relaxing experience” but said they believe there is a market for the candle regardless.

They added: “There are Northern Irish communities in places as far afield as the USA, Australia and New Zealand and the ‘Smell of the Twelfth’ candle makes a perfect gift to loved ones living abroad who are unable to attend events in Northern Ireland.”
