At least 20 people were injured when part of a funfair ride gondola fell apart in Carrickfergus.

Six of the injured, including three children, were treated in hospital after the accident at the Planet Fun fair at the Co Antrim town’s harbour.

A Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: “They have neck pain, back pain, leg pain and cuts. The Health and Safety Executive has been informed.”

Witnesses said a “steady stream of ambulances” had attended the scene and that emergency services arrived “in seconds”.

It’s understood the ride, called Top of the World, has swings around 60 metres high. The Northern Ireland Air Ambulance attended the scene and the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service said initially that two people had been taken to hospital after the incident while another two were taken to hospital by their parents and eight people with “superficial injuries” were treated there.

A spokesperson for the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service late last night said six people including three children were taken to hospital for treatment.

They added: “A number of patients were discharged at the scene. It is not anticipated that any others will require hospital attendance.”

They confirmed the received the first 999 call about the incident at 5.53pm and dispatched four emergency crews, a rapid response paramedic and an ambulance officer to the scene.

A spokesperson from Planet Fun said: “Important update. Please note that due to unforeseen circumstances, Planet Fun will be closed tonight for the 7.30-10.30pm session. All tickets will automatically be refunded. Further updates will follow.”

The PSNI confirmed: “Police are currently working with colleagues from the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service and Northern Ireland Ambulance Service at the Harbour in Carrickfergus this evening.

“The main Belfast Road was closed for a period of time but has now reopened to traffic.

“There are no further details at this time.”
