The woman found dead in her Dublin home last week has been remembered as a “lovely, kind lady” ahead of her funeral on Friday morning.

Mary Bergin who was also known as Maura, and was in her 80s, was found dead at her house at First Avenue, off Seville Place, in the north inner city, at around 11.50 am on Tuesday, April 13.

Her daughter Moire Bergin (45) was later arrested and charged with murder.

Judge Conal Gibbons granted her legal aid during a hearing at Dublin District Court and remanded her in custody to appear again on April 21 for directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions to be obtained.

On her death notice on RIP.ie, it states that Mary (Maura) Bergin (née McCabe) of Dublin 1/ Cootehill, Cavan (died) suddenly on April 13.

“Predeceased by her parents, Alex & Bridget, sister Kathleen, brother Seamus and brother-in-law Jim. Mary will be deeply missed by her loving husband Liam, her children, her treasured grandchildren and daughter-in-law,” it adds.

“Mary will be sadly missed by her dear siblings Johnny and wife Mary, Patsy and wife Mary, Jude and wife Patricia, Michael and wife Patricia, Rita, Vera and husband Hugh, Geraldine and husband Billy, Bernard, Sarah and husband Noel.”

The notice also refers to her nieces and nephews, large extended family, a circle of close friends “and lifelong neighbours in the Seville Place community where Mary proudly carried out her duties as Sacristan at St Laurence O’Toole Church and where she will be greatly missed”.

Mary will repose at Jennings Funeral Home, Amiens Street, Dublin 1 on Thursday, from 3pm to 5pm. Funeral Mass will take place on Friday morning at 10am at St Laurence O’Toole Church, Seville Place, followed by burial at St Michael’s Cemetery, Cootehill, Co Cavan.

In just one of the many condolences left on her RIP.ie page, one person has written: “Our sincere condolence on the tragic loss of Maura. She was a lovely kind lady.

“Your family were always great neighbors when we lived in the Avenue and especially when we moved in next door. We pray that you will find the strength to deal with this tragedy.”

Another adds: “Our sincere sympathy to the Bergin and McCabe families on your sad loss of Maura. May she rest in heavenly peace.”

Another reads: “Deepest sympathy to the Bergan and McCabe families on the sad death of Maura my thoughts prayers are with you all at this sad time. Rest in peace Maura.”

Among the many other tributes is one that states: “My deepest Sympathy to Rita, Vera and all the McCabe and Bergin families on the death of Maura. You are in my thoughts and prayers at this sad time. May she rest in peace.”

Speaking earlier to Sundayworld.com, Cllr Nial Ring, who knew the victim personally, said she was one of the loveliest women you could meet.

“Maura or Mary, as some people called her, had been living there on First Avenue for well over 40 years,” Cllr Ring said.

“She’s originally from Cavan but moved down to Seville Place where her daughter was born and brought up. She went to the local school.

“Maura was one of the loveliest women you could meet. She was a good old-fashioned Irish mammy, just a caring person.”

“Investigating gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward and are also appealing to those with camera footage including dash-cam footage from First Avenue/Seville Place or the surrounding areas at the time of the incident to make it available to them,” they said in statement.
