Gardaí are investigating the death of a teenage boy at a school in Co Cork yesterday afternoon. 

The 15-year-old was taken to Cork University Hospital where he later passed away.

Emergency services were alerted to Skibbereen Community School after receiving reports of a medical emergency.

Gardaí and paramedics rushed to the scene and the student was transported to hospital for treatment.

An investigation into the tragedy is now underway.

Gardaí are treating the incident as a tragic accident and will prepare a file for the local Coroner.

A Garda spokeswoman said: “Gardaí are investigating the death of a male child, aged 15 years, following an incident at a school in Co. Cork that occurred yesterday, Tuesday 16th November 2021.

“The child was taken to Cork University Hospital where they later passed.

“A file will be prepared for the Coroner's Court.

“No further information is available,” the garda spokeswoman added.

The Southern Star said the principal, Anton O'Mahony, had confirmed that the medical emergency in the school involved a member of the student community.
