Fianna Fáil councillor Uruemu Adejinmi has become Ireland’s first black female African mayor.

She has been elected as cathaoirleach of the Longford Municipal District. In a statement, she told how she was “deeply honoured” to represent her community as mayor.

“This is a historic day for Longford and I am delighted to share this moment with my family and friends,” she added.

“I look forward to working with my council colleagues, council exec and all stakeholders to continue the growth and development of our municipal area and county.”

Ms Adejinmi supported another candidate in the local elections in 2016 and subsequently joined the Fianna Fáil party. In 2018 she worked as an intern with the Immigrant Council of Ireland and was co-opted to local councillor Joe Flaherty’s seat when he became a TD.

She said her priorities when elected would be to focus on housing and attracting jobs and investment to the Longford region. “I am hoping to lobby for an influx of industry. Hopefully businesses will take a look at starting in Longford and that would help a lot of people who are leaving or commuting because of the lack of jobs,” she told the Irish Times.

Ms Adejinmi was born in Nigeria and moved to Longford in 2003. Speaking to RTÉ Radio One’s Drivetime, she said: “I identity as Irish, I identify as African, I wear both hats with confidence and with comfort.”
