These images capture the moment flames bellow from a bus on a busy Northern Ireland motorway today as terrified motorists pass by.

Police and NIFRS rushed to the scene after being alerted to the emergency call at 2:11pm.

There were 23 passengers on board and all escaped unharmed. The Ulsterbus caught fire on the slip road to Antrim area hospital between junction 6-7 of the M2.

A passing motorist who filmed the blaze said: “It was terrifying”.

Traffic Watch NI have taken to social media warning commuters of the incident on the M2: “M2 Citybound – now closed with traffic leaving the Motorway at J7 #Antrim Area Hospital Exit (Crosskennan) following a bus fire this afternoon – delays can be expected (14:50) #Ballamena.”

At this stage It is said that the accident was due to ‘accidental ignition’, an electrical fault within the bus itself and at this stage not intentional.

The road has now been closed off to all traffic in the direction of the city.
