Latest figures Coronavirus Ireland: 66 deaths and 1,078 new cases of Covid-19 as community vaccination to begin next week
The youngest person who died was just 39 years old while the oldest was 98
A further 66 people who contracted Covid-19 have died while 1,078 new cases of the illness have been announced.
41 of those who died passed away in February, eight deaths occurred in January, seven in December and nine occurred in November or earlier. The date of one death is still under investigation.
The youngest person who died was just 39 years old while the oldest was 98, with a median age of 84.
A total of 898 people are in hospital, 171 of whom are in ICU. There were 44 new hospitalisations in the last 24 hours.
The latest figures bring the total number of deaths to 3,931 while the total number of confirmed cases now stands at 208,796.
Validation of data at the Health Protection Surveillance Centre led to the denotification of two confirmed cases. This is reflected in the total figure.
Of the cases notified today:
- 523 are men / 549 are women
- 70% are under 45 years of age
- The median age is 32 years old
- 433 are in Dublin, 139 in Galway, 52 in Limerick, 49 in Limerick, 43 in Mayo and the remaining 362 cases are spread across all other counties.

Meanwhile, it has emerged GPs have been banned from using community halls or hotels as vaccination centres for the over-70s.
It has prompted concerns that lack of space in some surgeries will make it more difficult to have social distancing and lead to a slowdown in the pace of vaccinations as well as lack of parking for the elderly in winter weather.
It comes as the roll out of vaccines to people aged 85 years and older looks set to begin on Tuesday to around 100 practices where patients will be invited to get the first dose in their doctor’s surgery.
