Minor joy as Dublin win Leinster title
It proved a memorable evening for Dublin in O’Moore Park last Wednesday as they claimed their first Leinster Minor Football Championship title in five years, and first at the Under-17 grade, when overcoming Kildare by 2-10 to 0-8.
The Dubs looked in trouble as they trailed by 0-5 to 0-4 at the interval, having played with the elements in the first half, but second-half goals from Ryan Mitchell and Luke O’Boyle were just reward for a completely dominant second-half display, that left the Lilies chasing shadows by the final whistle.
“It really was a game of two halves,” acknowledged Dublin manager Dave Reynolds.
“We didn’t really reach our potential in the first-half and it just took us ten or fifteen minutes to get into the game.
“We were taking shots from angles that we wouldn’t normally takes shots from but once we settled down and we got a couple of scores, some of those nerves left us.
“We regrouped at half-time, went back to basics and made a couple of substitutions and I thought we were by far the better side in the second-half and I don’t think the final score flattered us at all.
“What’s pleasing is the substitutes that we brought in at half-time really worked with Charlie (McMorrow) and Clyde (Burke),
“Clyde is one of our joint captains so obviously there was a bit of disappointment for him not starting the game but when he came in he really showed his true colours along with Charlie.
“With substitutions, sometimes they work and sometimes they don’t but on this occasion they did,” said Reynolds.
